Fruit comes off the dry grown north-facing Block 2, all Houghton clone; aged in French barriques, 35% new, for 18 months, all of which makes an impact. But there’s enough fruit weight and depth to hold its own and carry the oak well. Expect florals and spice, flavours of cassis and mulberries, dark chocolate, black olives and even a little squid ink. Fuller bodied with lovely, shapely tannins and refreshing acidity to close. Happy to drink this now or in a few years.

Deep ruby from core to rim. Rich nose of ripe blackberry, wood oil and sarsaparilla. The palate backs up the nose with a deep and powerful presence, filled with both ripe fruit and oak spices. Still very youthful but everything is in place and it’s bound by firm ripe tannins. Great length and carries that length with focus and drive. This wine will reward your cellaring patience very well.
