Our romance with Hay Shed Hill was sealed far from the vines themselves. While living overseas in North America, those early years with a young family were beautiful but undeniably tough: long days, unfamiliar places, and a persistent ache for home. Our closest friends back in Perth knew this well. After multiple attempts to send care packages were stopped by customs due to red tape, they refused to give up. Instead, they got creative. Tucked among Australian classic snacks was a carefully disguised bottle of Hay Shed Hill 2014 Block 2 Cabernet, its label removed and hidden beneath the gift box, replaced with an innocuous olive oil label (please see photos attached). Against the odds, it made it through customs and arrived just in time for Christmas. It was so well disguised that we almost used it for salad dressing until a fortunately timed text message from a friend advised us to look under the box for a specific label… then the penny dropped.
That Christmas, when we poured the wine, the distance between us and home seemed to collapse. The taste was instantly familiar- comforting, grounding, and deeply emotional. It wasn’t just any bottle; it was the same vintage of Hay Shed Hill wine we had served at our wedding in 2017. In that moment, thousands of kilometres away, we were transported back to that day, to the people we loved, and to the place that shaped so much of who we are. Ever since, Hay Shed Hill has been more than a vineyard to us: it is a symbol of perseverance, friendship, and the enduring power of shared memories, carried across oceans in a single, unforgettable bottle.
Sincerely,
Oliver and Chloe
